Easter + Rotifer + Picturebox

Clerkenville East-West presents a triple bill of guitary pop goodness. Just £12 in advance (+fees), £15 on the door, if available (cash only).

Tickets here: www.wegottickets.com

EASTER have built a reputation as one of Manchester's best-kept secrets. Spurred along by singer/songwriter/guitarist Tom Long with a stable of Manc-underground shredders, they’re a formidable live act who’ve found admirers at BBC 6 Music and garnered praise from Uncut, Record Collector and NYC’s The Big Takeover. Easter are that increasingly rare-breed: a classic guitar band, but one which combines the UK post punk sound of NW forebears like The Chameleons, with a love of the fuzzy indie rock of Dinosaur Jr, GBV and Teenage Fanclub, with added twin-guitar weaving in the Television and Chris Forsyth tradition.
https://easterbanduk.bandcamp.com/

ROTIFER: Following his recent solo work (2023's 'Holding Hands in Petrópolis') and collaborations with the likes of Helen McCookerybook and Louis Philippe, Robert Rotifer, ex-Viennese songsmith permanently exiled in Canterbury, is returning to his electric power trio of the 2010s because, frankly, it's too much fun not to. This time round, Robert will be backed by sometime Alternative TV member Ruth Tidmarsh and long-time collaborator, Ian “Papernut Cambridge” Button. Expect old rockers about Frankfurt Kitchens, Canvey Island and the Aberdeen Marine Lab mixed with more delicate recent fare, partly still finger-picked, but electrically so. https://www.robertrotifer.co.uk/

PICTUREBOX: Melodic music from the cathedral city of Canterbury. Songs about girls, animals, football, anything, everything, nothing."Their wonky indie-pop is both endearing and worthy of a bigger stage. With knowing nods to the leftfield lo-fi meanderings of Syd Barrett, fellow Canterbury maverick Kevin Ayers and even early Blur. Picturebox are inventive enough to hold their own in such exalted company" (Shindig)

The Penrose Web + Trimdon Grange Explosion

Clerkenville East-West at The Betsey Trotwood is stoked to present the debut gig by The Penrose Web - the new cosmic garage psych project of Allan Crockford (The Prisoners/ Galileo 7) and Ian Button (Papernut Cambridge/ Death in Vegas). Special guests Trimdon Grange Explosion...."the new inheritors of the Pavement-Albion Band crossover sound"....will open this killer double bill matinee. Just £12 (+fees) in advance, £15 cash on the door, if available.

Tickets here: www.wegottickets.com

THE PENROSE WEB: Allan Crockford and Ian Button probably first nodded a cursory “Alright?” to each other in 1986 when their respective bands - The Prisoners and Thrashing Doves - were on the same bill supporting a late-era Ramones at Hammersmith Palais. Their histories from that point are fairly well known. Crockford moved on after The Prisoners into the James Taylor Quartet, The Solar Flares and beyond, while Button followed up Thrashing Doves with 10+ years as guitarist for Death In Vegas before moving more into production, and his own projects. The two current bands they lead - The Galileo 7 and Papernut Cambridge - have been operating out of Kent for the last decade or more…paths have crossed...gigs have been done together….records have been exchanged.
In summer 2023, a casual conversation at a Rochester covers night run by Kevin Younger of The High Span, led to Button and Crockford deciding to start a new project together. They began swapping backing tracks, song skeletons, lyrics and ideas, and very quickly had enough raw material for an album, and a project name - The Penrose Web.
As you’d expect, they both bring items from their own musical wardrobes to this: their own takes on sunshine pop, psych, garage, (northern) soul and indie combine in a set of dual-vocal led songs with layered harmonies and crisp punchy production. Crockford’s Medway credentials and Button’s SE London via Kent Coast retro pop chops merge geo-musically somewhere halfway along the M20.
Their first EP 'It’s….The Penrose Web' is a 4-song mix of sinister horror garage ("Hexapod Scene", "I Dreamt I Woke Up Dead"), phased mod energy ("Leap of Faith") and no-frills power-pop ("Geraldine") - and it’s the first 7" record pressed on a new bioplastic compound called Evovinyl. Their debut album is due in June on the fab Spinout Nuggets label. For this gig they'll be joined by some musical compadres to form a veritable Kent indie supergroup.
https://thepenroseweb.bandcamp.com/album/its-the-penrose-web-ep

TRIMDON GRANGE EXPLOSION is an improvising psych-folk ensemble from North-east London. Forming in the wake of acclaimed folk rock outfit The Eighteenth Day of May, TGE is a grand continuation and expansion of its previous incarnation's melding of 60s West Coast psych & The Velvet Underground's modal rock – with their own English traditional music and indie rock roots.
A seven-inch release on The Great Pop Supplement – a cover of Judy Henske & Jerry Yester's 'Raider' b/w 'The Trimdon Grange Explosion' – emerged in 2010, with their debut album released by Borley Rectory in 2017. The long-awaited follow-up, 'Dreams Buried Under The Sea', is due on Feral Child later this year.
“Has Acid Folk ever sounded so mesmerising and as incendiary as this...Open tuned guitars chime out hypnotic raga model notes against viola and rolling drums to create a droning wall of Spector like sound .” Optical Sounds. "Trimdon Grange Explosion marry a love of traditional music with the spirit of psychedelic improv, a modal approach where the threat of discordancy saves them from the ersatz comfort zone of "acid-folk". It's like Fairport Convention sparring with The Velvet Underground," Shindig!

We ❤️ LA - a benefit show for those affected by the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles.

Here at the Betsey we have a long standing tradition of cultural exchange with bands and musicians from Los Angeles, California. Many LA artists have played at the Betsey over the years and many a friendship has been formed. Now some of these friends and their extended family have been badly affected by those recent fires.

Homes have been lost, livelihoods taken away…we’d really like to help, so we are calling on you, our faithful, and hosting a fundraising show at the Betsey starring our friends DANNY GEORGE WILSON, BIRDIE and THE HANGING STARS.

Tickets are free, but a donation will be required upon entry (we recommend £10, but please give as much or little as you can). All proceeds will go to the MusicCares and Sweet Relief charities - both helping musicians and making sure the money goes where it’s needed the most. It’s all happening on Sunday 2nd March. 2pm doors, music starts from 3pm.

Tickets are very limited, so book a space now!

Alan’s book, How To Never Have A Hit, is published on 24 February. This is the gig that goes with the book! The new album was produced by Simon (Fairground Attraction, Billy Bragg, Kathryn Williams) and follows on from Tim's previous solo LPs The Long Game (2015) and Foreign Domestic (2007). It features the singles ‘Pomme de Terre’, ‘Intensive Care Unit’ and ‘Jamie’s Going Snowboarding’.

Tim is perhaps best known for his work with Robyn Hitchcock, Kid Loco and his band Departure Lounge (Bella Union), whose album ’Too Late To Die Young’ was an early Album Of The Week on BBC6 Music and whose most recent release, ‘Transmeridian’ featured Peter Buck of R.E.M. as special guest.

 Reviews of Tim’s work:

Casebook studies in flawless songwriting. This is great pop music, unadorned by spin, resolutely free of pretence” (NME)

A voice somewhere between Lou Reed and Edwyn Collins - made to sing of love and truth" (les Inrockuptibles)

Combines an understanding of the songwriter’s art and a love of cracking tunes. An album to return to again and again” (Music Week)

Hungry Dog Brand + Richard Warren + Malcolm Kaksois

Clerkenville East-West is delighted to welcome back three friends who have been absent from the capital's stages for far too long.
Just £8 + booking fee in advance, £10 on the door.

Singer-songwriter Martin Dowsing aka HUNGRY DOG BRAND returns with a new line-up for his first band gigs in 15 years, featuring Alan Boyd (Little Sparta/Movieland) on bass, Matthew Karas (Glassglue) on keys, and Ean Ravenscroft (Dexter Bentley/Joss Cope/Gerry Mitchell Allstars) on drums.
“The UK’s Martin Dowsing is a kindred spirit to the estimable lineage of confessional, punk poets before him. Vic Godard, Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Bitter Springs, Band of Holy Joy… If you like honest types bearing their English souls, this is the shit.” Michael Pearlstein, Big Takeover magazine
“Hungry Dog’s lyrics have a brilliant authenticity to them; they’re quirky, smart, and very English. He’s funny, a great storyteller, snarky as hell, and when he wants to be, a total heartbreaker. Listen to 'The Lake'. You’ll never forget the song. It’s like a Nick Cave murder ballad performed by Public Image Limited. Or 'The Red Scarf'. It’s like Talking With The Taxman-era Billy Bragg delivered by a Replacements covers band from Croydon. Dowsing has been described as a punk poet, and that’s exactly right.” Christopher ‘Preacher Boy’ Watkins
https://hungrydogbrand.bandcamp.com/

RICHARD WARREN came to prominence in the mid 1990s as singer, songwriter and guitarist for The Hybirds. In 1998 he went on to form Echoboy.
Both acts had limited commercial but reasonable critical success, most notably recording a number of John Peel radio sessions.
Between 2004 and 2018, Richard worked with artists including Spiritualized, Starsailor, Soulsavers, Kings of the South Seas and Jon Boden.
During this time he also issued his first four acclaimed solo albums.
In 2019 he began a new phase of writing and recording, claiming it was "a new beginning, breaking the composition and production processes down to their most elemental form". As of 2024 this large catalogue of new material is still unreleased and this will be the first time he has played the songs live.

MALCOLM KAKSOIS - gruff-voiced eccentric with darkly humorous songs of failure and disaster. Big in Finland, he was also a popular favourite at the legendary lost 12 Bar Club of Denmark Street.
"Malcolm Kaksois lives in a strange world. A world filled with empty beer cans, Radishes, and slugs. No wonder he has a lot to say, and his way of expressing himself is by writing songs. He's written quite a few. His sound can only be described as Low-Fi. His guitar, his voice - a kind of screaming mixture of an early David Bowie, and David Essex, with a slight North London twang, some simple drum loops reverberated to the extent that they sound like they are played in a distant church hall, very distant, plus any other sound effects created using the aforementioned empty beer cans, Radishes, and slugs. But that was all up until he brought himself a synthesiser. Now added in to the mix are the kind of swirls and beeps any of the 80s synth pioneers would be proud of on their greatest opuses." Ralph Dartford and Gary Clark present House Anthems, & guest Lloyd Coombes

'House Anthems’ - Adventures in suburban poetry and sonic shapeshifting with Ralph Dartford and Gary Clark.

House Anthems is a collection of poetry set to music. The themes concern themselves with a lost England and a family tragedy. Ralph Dartford and Gary Clark grew up together in the Badlands of the Essex Delta. They have been friends all their lives, but have not worked together in 40 years.

Ralph is a commentator, critic, educator and agitator. His books, ‘Recovery Songs’, ‘Hidden Music’ and now, ‘House Anthems’ are highly acclaimed.

Gary Clark is one of the pioneers of the ‘Basildon Electro Sound’. He has written songs for Alison Moyet and had worked with some of the most influential British artists of the last 30 years in many guises.

Supported by Betsey stalwart Lloyd Coombes - bringing his own new poetry to the party.
