Tartine de Clous
Growing up in the department of Charente in Western France, Tartine de Clous have shared friendship & song since their youth. Storied songs are presented in an uplifting & moving communality which encourages close listening & trust that unfolds, as Alasdair Roberts notes, ‘with a patient confidence’.
Tickets here: www.wegottickets.com
Part of a lineage that includes some of the great French folk revival groups of the late 20th century, they sing predominantly a repertoire of unaccompanied three-part harmony arrangements of traditional songs. Their new album Compter les dents, recorded in the home of late musician & ethnomusicologist Claude Flagel, is a collection of songs from the Vendée department on France’s Western seaboard, ‘songs of love and war, life and death, played out on land and sea’ (Alasdair Roberts).
As Chiz Williams, writing on the recording of Au Cube, notes, the songs hold a deeply sensory & transportive power - ‘to taste the stews we ate, the stories we swapped, the technology we manipulated and the people we touched’. In the eloquent simplicity of Alasdair Roberts, the songs of Tartine de Clous are ‘songs passed down and sung by ordinary men and women, gracefully delivered with the poetic economy which unites the folk song of all peoples’. Stories told through a song that contains no ending.
Tonight’s show is part of a UK tour and will close with the collaborative end notes of a first musical meeting between Tartine, Toby & Aidan.
‘extraordinary intimacy, an atmosphere quite unlike that of a standard gig - it’s as though you’re being regaled with songs by a few high-spirited locals in a French tavern,’ David Mckenna, The Quietus.

Chris Murphy + Casey Neill
Black cat Music and Evans above are proud to present a joint headline show featuring Chris Murphy and Casey Neill
Tickets here: www.wegottickets.com
Casey Neill is a songwriter from Portland, Oregon performing high energy indie folk, infused with haunting melodies and weather beaten narratives. His last two albums were released on Fluff & Gravy records, one with his band Casey Neill & The Norway Rats, Sending Up Flares, and one solo, time zero land. A prolific road warrior since the late 90s, Neill tours throughout the USA, Japan, and Europe, performing at venues such as Town Hall in New York, San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, and the Newport Folk Festival. Neill has been establishing himself in the UK over the last few years, playing at London’s Green Note, Hebden Bridge’s Trades Club and Maverick Festival, Suffolk and is set to return this summer with dates confirmed at Cafe #9, Sheffield, The Betsey Trotwood and Maverick Festival alongside guitarist Chet Lyster.
Born and raised in New York, Chris Murphy is a vibrant violinist, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, now based in Los Angeles. He performs over 200 concerts annually across the USA, The Netherlands, France, and the UK. His original songs explore themes of love, loss, redemption, hope, and fear. Murphy describes his music as a “live film score,” offering listeners a journey into his world. He is renowned for his proficiency across genres, from Jazz and Classical to Folk, World Music, and Ambient; his performances are charismatic and engaging, drawing in his audience to make them feel elevated. Rootstime notes that “Murphy is a master and a craftsman on his instruments…” promising memorable and captivating shows.
Guitarist Chet Lyster produced and co-wrote the songs on Sending Up Flares. A member of EELS since the early 2000s’, Lyster has been a staple of their Europe tours. He was a touring and recording member of Lucinda Williams’ band for a few years and plays on her Grammy nominated album ‘Little Honey’. Chet has been a member of Casey Neill & The Norway Rats since it’s inception and has contributed to many other recordings and bands in Portland.

Easter + Rotifer + Picturebox
Clerkenville East-West presents a triple bill of guitary pop goodness. Just £12 in advance (+fees), £15 on the door, if available (cash only).
Tickets here: www.wegottickets.com
EASTER have built a reputation as one of Manchester's best-kept secrets. Spurred along by singer/songwriter/guitarist Tom Long with a stable of Manc-underground shredders, they’re a formidable live act who’ve found admirers at BBC 6 Music and garnered praise from Uncut, Record Collector and NYC’s The Big Takeover. Easter are that increasingly rare-breed: a classic guitar band, but one which combines the UK post punk sound of NW forebears like The Chameleons, with a love of the fuzzy indie rock of Dinosaur Jr, GBV and Teenage Fanclub, with added twin-guitar weaving in the Television and Chris Forsyth tradition.
https://easterbanduk.bandcamp.com/
ROTIFER: Following his recent solo work (2023's 'Holding Hands in Petrópolis') and collaborations with the likes of Helen McCookerybook and Louis Philippe, Robert Rotifer, ex-Viennese songsmith permanently exiled in Canterbury, is returning to his electric power trio of the 2010s because, frankly, it's too much fun not to. This time round, Robert will be backed by sometime Alternative TV member Ruth Tidmarsh and long-time collaborator, Ian “Papernut Cambridge” Button. Expect old rockers about Frankfurt Kitchens, Canvey Island and the Aberdeen Marine Lab mixed with more delicate recent fare, partly still finger-picked, but electrically so. https://www.robertrotifer.co.uk/
PICTUREBOX: Melodic music from the cathedral city of Canterbury. Songs about girls, animals, football, anything, everything, nothing."Their wonky indie-pop is both endearing and worthy of a bigger stage. With knowing nods to the leftfield lo-fi meanderings of Syd Barrett, fellow Canterbury maverick Kevin Ayers and even early Blur. Picturebox are inventive enough to hold their own in such exalted company" (Shindig)

Morris Folk Club runs 7.30pm-10.30pm-ish.
Check Twitter and Facebook for information on what's happening this month, not least in case of cancellations or special themes, or sign up to the Morris emailing list.

It's always a very appreciative audience - and, if you're worried about that kind of thing (which you shouldn't be), a supportive and forgiving one too.
A unique part of Morris Folk Club is that it incorporates elements of 'open choir rehearsal', when anyone can get a taste of singing with the choir, as during the evening we all together learn a song or two or go over an old favourite.

We ❤️ LA - a benefit show for those affected by the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles.
Here at the Betsey we have a long standing tradition of cultural exchange with bands and musicians from Los Angeles, California. Many LA artists have played at the Betsey over the years and many a friendship has been formed. Now some of these friends and their extended family have been badly affected by those recent fires.
Homes have been lost, livelihoods taken away…we’d really like to help, so we are calling on you, our faithful, and hosting a fundraising show at the Betsey starring our friends DANNY GEORGE WILSON, BIRDIE and THE HANGING STARS.
Tickets are free, but a donation will be required upon entry (we recommend £10, but please give as much or little as you can). All proceeds will go to the MusicCares and Sweet Relief charities - both helping musicians and making sure the money goes where it’s needed the most. It’s all happening on Sunday 2nd March. 2pm doors, music starts from 3pm.
Tickets are very limited, so book a space now!
